The University of Auckland was established in 1883 and has grown into an international centre of learning and academic excellence. It offers a comprehensive range of world-class study programmes including some 86 degrees and more than 40 diplomas. It provides a stimulating environment for around 30,000 students each year, more than 5,000 of whom are international students from over 76 countries.

The University of Auckland's degrees are recognised internationally. Ranked in the top 100 universities worldwide, it is the only university in New Zealand with membership of Universitas 21, a prestigious association of major research-intensive universities throughout the world.

The University of Auckland is also a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, an association of some of the world's premier universities that aims to foster stronger links in social, economic and scientific research and scholarly activity.

Membership of both associations is by invitation and limited to research-led institutions of international reputation across a broad spectrum of disciplines. The University of Auckland is New Zealand's largest research University. It supports numerous disciplinary and interdisciplinary research groups. Some examples include:

  • The New Zealand Asia Institute, which co-ordinates the study of Asia across a wide range of disciplines and assists in developing national foreign policy.
  • The International Research Institute for Māori and Indigenous Education, which draws together a group of highly skilled and respected scholars dedicated to quality outcomes in Māori and indigenous education.
  • The Centre for Archaeological Research – a collection of research facilities that form a centre of excellence for modern archaeological research in the Australasia-Pacific region.

The range of courses is extensive and academically diverse. Many courses and research activities reflect the place of Auckland and New Zealand in the world.

The Māori Studies Department teaches a language and culture unique to New Zealand. History, Sociology and Political Studies at The University of Auckland incorporate a New Zealand perspective and stimulate exciting comparative studies. Film and television studies are also actively promoted at the University and the department is the largest and most successful of its kind in the country. In the field of science, the University has a strong reputation for Marine and Environmental Sciences, with a Marine Research Laboratory situated an hour north of Auckland.

The City Campus is located in the heart of Auckland, separated from the tower blocks of the central business district by historic Albert Park. To the south-east lie the trees and open spaces of the Auckland Domain. Proximity to the cultural and commercial amenities of the country's largest city, the attractive green setting and harbour views bestow advantages seldom enjoyed by inner city campuses.

The University of Auckland is itself like a small town. It doesn't take long to find your way around and to feel right at home.

The Quad is a lively place where there is always something happening. It is situated in the centre of the city campus. The main cafe, convenience store, hairdressers, bookstore, bus agency, travel agency, student law, women space, student radio station and much more can be found here. The Quad also hosts a market every Thursday, and other organised events. You can also enjoy the regular performances in music, theatre, and dance at the University Maidment theatre, and there are also several galleries on campus showcasing students' and visiting artists' work.
