Introduction to Postgraduate Studies
This one-day workshop will introduce you to people and resources to help you decide if postgraduate study is right for you, and which programme will best meet your goals. We have information on practical aspects such as how much it will cost and what financial help is available. We will introduce you to a panel of current postgraduate students and you will also meet recent graduates who are taking on new challenges after having successfully completed their postgraduate studies.
Course outline
9am: Welcome, introductions
9.30am: How Adults Learn. Dr Susan Carter will lead a lively, interactive session on how adults learn and will provide insights into managing your own learning.
10.30am: Coffee break.
10.45am: Choosing the right programme. Advisers from the School of Graduate Studies will provide information on entry requirements, prerequisites, cross crediting and credit transfer. Fulltime and part-time study options will also be discussed. The differences between research and taught postgraduate studies will be outlined, and advice on selecting the right programme provided.
11.45 am: Practical support during your studies. The range of postgraduate scholarships, awards and bursaries, usually awarded on merit, will be outlined. This session will also discuss funding, loans and allowances options and the wide range of other student services available.
12.30 pm: Lunch break.
1pm: Postgraduate Student Panel. Current postgraduate students will share their study experiences, including why they chose to study at The University of Auckland. There will be opportunity for questions and discussion.
1.45pm: Is it worth it? A panel of graduates will talk about the difference a postgraduate qualification has made to their careers.
2.30pm: Next steps. This session will cover how to apply for admission and develop a personal project plan.
3.30pm: Close
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course students will be able to describe how adults learn; demonstrate an understanding of the commitment required for successful postgraduate study; select the appropriate postgraduate programme; apply for scholarships or other financial assistance; develop a career plan.
