New Start General

New Start General is designed to prepare you for entry into a range of degrees at The University of Auckland.

As a New Start student you will be introduced to a variety of topics in humanities, social sciences, education, law and theology. So having assessed your areas of interest and considered the options available, you will be able make the right decision about your future study.

Entry requirements

You must be 20 years or over and be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.

Your New Start General

New Start General offers you:

  • 47 hours of university learning with weekly lectures (16 hours), workshops (22 hours) and tutorials (9 hours).
  • A choice of locations - The University of Auckland City Campus, Manukau, West Auckland or Tai Tokerau Campus (Whangarei).
  •  A course book with your timetable, assignments and course information.
  • A Saturday Orientation workshop.
  • Mentoring and peer support.
  • Part-time study over 13 weeks.

New Start General will include the Orientation Day, weekly lectures and workshops with additional tutorials to help you with your assignments. At Orientation you will get an overview of the programme and tips to manage your studies. You will also join a study group and sign up for your workshops plus a campus tour.

Lectures

During the programme you will attend weekly lectures for two hours. Lectures are taught by University staff from various departments and faculties. These classes will introduce you to a new subject area each week and may include the following lecture topics.

  • Anthropology
  • Art History
  • Asian Studies
  • Classics and Ancient History
  • Comparative Literature
  • Education
  • Film, Televison and Media Studies
  • History
  • Law
  • Māori Studies
  • Philosophy
  • Political Studies
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Test preparation

NB: lecture topics and assignments may vary each semester.

Workshops

To support you during the course, we run a series of research and learning workshops. These workshops will help you develop your skills and understand the expectations of university study. Most workshops run for one or two hours and include these topics:

  • Assessing your language skills
  • Essay writing skills
  • Life on campus
  • Managing your New Start studies
  • Memory, revision and exam techniques
  • Note taking and reviewing lectures
  • Planning your degree studies
  • Reading critically
  • Using information technology
  • Using the library

Tutorials

As well as attending weekly lectures, you will be expected to attend tutorials for assessed topics during the course. These small group discussions give you the opportunity to clarify any queries you may have about lectures or assignments. Tutorials are normally held the day after the lecture. Tutorial classes will be announced in the first week of the course.

Assessment

During your course you will complete three assignments and sit an end-of-course test. These tasks will help prepare you for university studies.

To complete the course you are required to submit all coursework and sit the test to receive a final grade.

Learning outcomes

By the end of your New Start course you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the skills necessary for undergraduate study
  • Write essays in an appropriate academic style
  • Demonstrate study skills and self management
  • Demonstrate the ability to critically analyse and evaluate concepts
  • Describe and debate issues of importance within at least ten different disciplines
  • Make informed decisions, and plan an undergraduate course of study and enrol at The University of Auckland

What happens after New Start General?

You will receive your final result 3-4 weeks after completing your final test in Week 13. Depending on your final result from the course you may be able to apply for entry for a university degree, diploma or certificate in Arts, Education, Law, Science or Theology in the next semester.

Some programmes have additional entry requirements. If you have a particular degree you are interested in you may want to seek advice from a faculty adviser.
