New Start General
New Start General is designed to prepare you for entry into a range of degrees at The University of Auckland.
As a New Start student you will be introduced to a variety of topics in humanities, social sciences, education, law and theology. So having assessed your areas of interest and considered the options available, you will be able make the right decision about your future study.
New Start General offers you:
- 47 hours of university learning with weekly lectures (16 hours), workshops (22 hours) and tutorials (9 hours).
- A choice of locations - The University of Auckland City Campus, Manukau, West Auckland or Tai Tokerau Campus (Whangarei).
- A course book with your timetable, assignments and course information.
- A Saturday Orientation workshop.
- Mentoring and peer support.
- Part-time study over 13 weeks.
New Start General will include the Orientation Day, weekly lectures and workshops with additional tutorials to help you with your assignments. At Orientation you will get an overview of the programme and tips to manage your studies. You will also join a study group and sign up for your workshops plus a campus tour.
During the programme you will attend weekly lectures for two hours. Lectures are taught by University staff from various departments and faculties. These classes will introduce you to a new subject area each week and may include the following lecture topics.

- Comparative Literature
- Education
- Film, Televison and Media Studies
- History
- Law
- Māori Studies
- Philosophy
- Political Studies
- Psychology
- Sociology
- Test preparation
NB: lecture topics and assignments may vary each semester.
To support you during the course, we run a series of research and learning workshops. These workshops will help you develop your skills and understand the expectations of university study. Most workshops run for one or two hours and include these topics:
- Assessing your language skills
- Essay writing skills
- Life on campus
- Managing your New Start studies
- Memory, revision and exam techniques
- Note taking and reviewing lectures
- Planning your degree studies
- Reading critically
- Using information technology
- Using the library
